Victory is Life

What is the purpose of living if not to reach the highest precipice imaginable? The undeniable instinct of every living being is to strive forward, to keep going as long as it can. Through the every varying, and dutifully fickle, process of evolution and involution over a vast, nigh unimaginable swath of time, we have arrived to a point where living things are conscious of the fact that they are conscious of the fact that they are conscious of facts. This is an unbelievable milestone in Universal History and not something we should take for granted or snub our noses at. The very essence of creation involves growth, improvement, and the drive to continue onward for as long as possible. Faith without works is dead. (James 2:14-26)

On a long enough timeline the survival rate for everyone drops to zero.

Today is a Good Day to Die

In the popular nihilist cult classic Fight Club, Tyler Durden postulated that real freedom comes with knowing our own mortality without fearing it, that it’s only when a person has lost everything that he, she, or it is free to do anything. There’s a lot of truth to those statements which can be comforting to some and highly disturbing to others. While abandoning all hope and going on an ego-fueled rampage is probably not the answer we should subscribe to, understanding the existence of the clock and the fact that it is ticking can be an awesome motivational force. There’s only so much that can be done, so the things you do are important. That’s a good thing to consider. Remember that next time you pee in the shower.

That’s almost dumb enough to qualify as philosophy.

Ever After

I really believe people need a direction in life. Without an aim, people are aimless. Aimless people have nowhere to go. Our species were essentially monkeys rubbing sticks together a short time ago and now we’re exploring space and ameliorating suffering at an exponential rate. I don’t know what the upper limit of an individual is, but near as I can tell there is none. I’ve heard people criticize the admonition to follow your bliss, but in its own proper place (among many) it really does provide a glimmer of something beyond the mundane. It does you absolutely no good to become resentful because no one has descended from the heavens and bestowed you with a great quest, or because your original plan didn’t work out quite the way you wanted it to. Sometimes things happen that are beyond your control, or people move in directions inconvenient to you. The important thing is to maintain the realization that it’s not always about you and the very best you can do is aim for the very best that you can do. You will get better at it.

We’ll keep on fighting ’till the end.
